Call me silly, but
Let me be frank about something. I think it was the woman loved first, who first knew the spousal desire. We know about the Garden, and the man’s loneliness among the beasts. We know about the deep sleep and the borrowed rib and Adam’s ‘At last.’ Yet I think one of the great secrets between the lines of Genesis is the glow of Eve when she first saw her beloved, the popping spark from the radiant heart that said, silently, ‘At last.’ Adam knew not just by the company of her body, but by her whole composition. He knew she was unlike the beasts not only because she was like him, but because she looked at him quite unlike he had been looked at by the cow, or the lemur, or the lion. That first love lay deep within the heart of Eve. It was only a second’s difference between the man and the woman, but it was there. And that moment repeats itself in all the children of Eden. In some cases those seconds stretch into years but day unto day takes up the same story. Women love, and they wait. And the waiting is what makes a woman a real lover. In the waiting space she finds she's longing lastly for God.

Analog
There is a clock
keeping me company.
I bought it for 8.99
at Meijer
and put two AAA batteries
in the back.
And it ticks
ticks
ticks
so that the seconds
aren't as still
as silent
as lonely.
Except
it's
just
a
clock.

What a frustrating day
Nobody knows that I really enjoyed the homily at Mass today. Nobody knows how much I enjoyed giving a tour to a group of 5th graders. Nobody knows that I read out loud in New Testament class for the first time today. Nobody knows I did an extra good job brushing my teeth. Nobody knows I smiled at the picture of the mother and the baby, laughed out loud at a story I was reading. Nobody knows I double checked my work on the t-shirt design to make sure everyone would like it. Nobody knows I'm trying not to be so conceptual, trying to be more present to people. Nobody knows I had a great conversation with my parents today. Nobody knows how excited I got about a story I'm writing. All anybody saw of me today was me irritable, me tired, me upset, me earringless, the 'pessimist', cursing and angry, stumbling to explain what it's like to have days where you have to fight against natural feelings, feel embarrassed because you couldn't hold a stiff upper lip, the me that just wants to sleep and be left alone, the me that was frumpy and bogged down by wet clothes, oh and earringless. I feel like a middle schooler. I feel completely misunderstood and unappreciated today. It's so frustrating to have nothing to give to others, and to even be a beggar in their sight, asking them for mercy, understanding, forgiveness, gentleness, when you simply can't find the resources in you to give back. It's frustrating when maybe what you could give back--a story, a smile, a laugh, a conversation--is hidden from any view but yours and God's. What a frustrating day.

Unbridled Joy
I love small cute animals, twinkling stars, roses, rainbows, and the color pink. And every day I pray for world peace.

Dumb Dog
I was sitting outside of Waddick's (A place for students and faculty to meet) Coffee Shop today when a girl walked by toting a stuffed dog on the end of a leash. "Come on Roxy," she said and made the little Pit Bull bounce. It caught my eye and I turned to see what was being so unnaturally dragged down the hallway. Dumb. Did she lose a bet? Then I turned around and saw another girl following the girl and stuffed dog dynamic duo, smirking and taking notes.
Great. I have just become the victim of a 100xx level sociology experiment. I hate that feeling. My reaction will be tally marked and presented in one of DeBartolo's theatre-sized classrooms. "According to our calculations of the stuffed dog experiment, which actually rivals anything ever done by Jung or Pavlov, 12 people had a NATURAL REACTION to a stuffed toy being dragged down a hallway in an academic building. Based on these findings, we conclude people still harbor an innate desire for the comfort of a stuffed animal and the companionship of man's best friend."
Great work, scientists of tomorrow.

Ladies
"An intelligent, discreet, and pious young woman is worth more than all the money in the world. Tell her that you love her more than your own life, because this present life is nothing, and that your only hope is that the two of you pass through this life in such a way that, in the world to come, you will be united in perfect love."
- St. John Chrysostom
That is really quite beautiful.

I'm Sorry Greg Floyd
Apparently there have been not so subtle murmurs about my recent blog template. I apologize--the black was getting a little simplistic for me. I'll work on the makeup over the holiday season.
